One question I struggle with is: “Are you okay?”
It sounds simple. Kind, even.
But the automatic answer is always the same: “I’m fine.”
And most of the time, I’m not.
Inside, there are thoughts boiling. Worries. Responsibilities. Things I don’t even know how to explain properly. Life feels heavy in quiet ways that are hard to summarize in a casual conversation.
If I were to truly answer that question, it wouldn’t be a short response. It would be layers. Context. Stories. Emotions that don’t fit into a quick exchange.
And sometimes I’m afraid of two things:
Either I’ll exhaust the person who asked,
or I’ll feel guilty for unloading too much.
So I choose the safer answer.
“I’m fine.”
But I’ve also learned something important.
Talking matters. Staying silent all the time doesn’t protect anyone — it just isolates us. When we find the strength to share, even a small part of what we’re carrying, it can open doors to understanding. Sometimes even to solutions we would never see on our own.
So I don’t hate the question.
I just haven’t fully learned how to answer it in a way that feels honest — without feeling like I’m becoming a burden.
Maybe the real answer is somewhere in between.
Not “I’m fine.”
Not everything all at once.
Just, “I’m trying.”
And maybe that’s enough.
